University of Nicosia Medical School

At the University of Nicosia Medical School (UNMS), you can study Medicine and Veterinary Medicine abroad on a state-of-the-art campus with a warm Mediterranean climate all year round.

As the largest university in Cyprus, the University of Nicosia launched its first medical program in 2011 and now offers both a 6-year MD (Medical Doctor) program and a Veterinary Medicine program, open to international students. Today, over 1,000 students from more than 90 countries are enrolled. The university is strongly committed to medical and veterinary education and research.

Hyper Modern University

The faculty is highly experienced, and the university maintains international partnerships and modern facilities equipped with advanced learning resources. Nicosia

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, has a population of around 300,000 residents. Its city center features charming narrow streets and historic architecture, surrounded by the city’s old Venetian walls.

As a student, you’ll find plenty to do in your free time, museums, cultural sites, shopping, restaurants, cafés, and taverns. The city is lively in summer, when tourists fill its streets, and calmer in autumn and winter. For excursions, students can easily reach Cyprus’s beautiful beaches, such as Fig Tree Bay and Ayia Napa, or even go skiing in the Troodos Mountains during the winter months.

The University of Nicosia offers a wide range of student clubs and associations that promote community engagement, health, sports, and culture. On campus, you’ll find a fully equipped gym, and nearby there are public swimming pools, tennis and basketball courts, and running tracks.

Courses & Programs

Medical Program

Length: 6 years / 360 ECTS

The Medical Program is a 6-year program taught in English. It corresponds to 360 ECTS credits, and upon completion, students earn the title Doctor of Medicine (MD). The program is divided into three phases: the first focuses on theoretical subjects, the second on pre-clinical and disease-related studies, and the third on clinical training, where students gain practical experience in hospitals. The program begins in September.

During the third phase, students may need to communicate in Greek to better understand their patients during clinical rotations. The University of Nicosia offers Greek language classes during the first four years to help students prepare for this, though knowledge of Greek is not mandatory.

Veterinary Program

Length: 5 years / 300 ECTS

The Veterinary Medicine Program at the University of Nicosia Medical School is a 5-year program designed to provide high-quality scientific and clinical education in veterinary medicine. The curriculum takes an integrated approach, enabling students to understand the complex science behind veterinary practice and research.

Students gain a solid foundation in the biological principles of normal and pathological function, disease prevention, and the safe management of animal production systems. The program’s primary goal is to prepare graduates for successful careers in veterinary practice, while also equipping them with a strong academic foundation for potential research or academic careers.

Medical Study Abroad's PreMed Course

Length: 7–15 weeks

Medical Study Abroad's Premed course serves two main purposes. First, it prepares you to pass the entrance exams for medical universities. Second, it helps you build a solid foundation for your future medical studies.

The instructor has extensive experience in both research and teaching within these subjects and is highly regarded by students. You’ll also receive insights into what topics are typically covered on university entrance exams, and, importantly, what isn’t, so you can focus your study time efficiently. Graduate-Entry MD (GEMD)

The Graduate-Entry MD (GEMD) program leads to the same qualification as the standard MD program but is specifically designed for students who already hold a Bachelor’s degree in any field. In addition to a Bachelor’s degree, applicants must have taken one of the following exams: GAMSAT or MCAT. The GEMD program is 5 years long, and GAMSAT can now be taken online.

Although this program leads to the same MD title, it follows a different curriculum tailored for more mature and academically experienced students. GEMD emphasizes project-based, group, and independent learning, as well as clinical competence and patient interaction starting from the first year.

Grade Requirements

The University of Nicosia bases its admissions primarily on academic performance. You are welcome to email your diploma to advisor@medicalstudyabroad.com, and we will make a preliminary assessment of your chances for admission in the upcoming fall semester.

In general, very high grades are required in all courses at the advanced level, especially in Science subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Mathematics. Typically, grades around A/B level are expected in these subjects. Your overall academic performance will also be taken into account.

GEMD (Graduate-Entry MD)

To be eligible for the Graduate-Entry MD (GEMD) program, applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree (in any field) and have completed one of the following standardized tests: GAMSAT or MCAT. Applicants must meet the university’s minimum score requirements—contact us for detailed information. IELTS or TOEFL scores are also required.

Medical Student/Medical Studies – The University of Nicosia Medical School

Tell us about a typical school day!

A typical day at the University of Nicosia Medical School is filled with interactive lectures, small-group tutorials, and engaging discussions. The weekly schedule is organized in a systematic way that allows students to balance academics with extracurricular activities.

The university emphasizes independent learning, giving students the opportunity to book cadavers and clinical rooms to practice their clinical skills (available for MD Year 2 students and onwards). There is never a dull moment at UNIC, each week brings a large amount of information to learn and many interesting discussions to take part in.

How do you live?

I live in a single-room accommodation offered by the university, located just a five-minute walk from the main campus. It’s very convenient and within walking distance of grocery stores, the medical school, the gym, coffee shops, and the mall.

My studio apartment includes my own kitchen, bathroom/shower, desk, balcony, TV, and everything I need for comfortable daily living.

What do you think of Nicosia as a place to study?

Nicosia is a very student-friendly city. It has fun attractions, parks, malls, and shopping streets to explore. The beautiful and scenic beaches of Cyprus are only 1–2 hours away by bus and are absolutely worth visiting and swimming in.

What do you usually do in your free time?

In my free time, I focus on activities that help me recharge for the upcoming week, whether that’s spending time with friends, visiting the old town, reading a book, or simply staying in bed and resting.

Are you happy with your studies? Would you recommend them to others?

Based on my personal experience, I think the university is excellent and offers both strong academic and social opportunities. You get early exposure to clinical placements and patient care starting in Year 2. The university also provides access to cadavers and early training with medical equipment, such as using a stethoscope and measuring blood pressure and blood sugar levels.

Student services organize fun social events and gatherings, giving students the chance to meet new people and take a break from their busy schedules. And as for Cyprus, it’s a beautiful country with sunshine almost all year round, so there’s no doubt you’ll enjoy studying medicine here.

What are your plans for the future?

My future plans involve deepening my understanding of both the theoretical and experimental aspects of medicine. As technology continues to advance and influence many areas of our daily lives, I want to be involved in researching and evaluating new medical findings to help further develop the field.

This program brings me closer to that goal by helping me build a strong foundation and gain an advanced understanding of how the human body functions.

How did you decide to study abroad?

Choosing where and at which university to spend such important years of your life is a big decision, often made within a short timeframe. I made sure to thoroughly research my options, connect with senior students to learn about their experiences, compare universities by listing pros and cons, and stay in close contact with my admissions advisor.
